Difference between Fusion Middleware and Fusion Application - Part 01

Lets start with Fusion Applications...

Fusion Applications are scheduled to be released in 2009 and will be ERP software package. This new application set is designed to be Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)-compliant (this means.... SOA Definition: A business-centric architectural appoach that supports integrating business processes. The concept of SOA is to have a world of services that can be subscribed to and used through different applications. With SOA you can grab all data as you need. You can also configure the system to show this data through a single portal-type interface for users.) and uses the middleware solution.

Oracle is reviewing all of functionality from his current product lines. They plan to take the best of functionality and place it into Fusion Applications.
With this in mind, many people ask what they can do today to prepare for the new Fusion Applications.

To prepare, you can start to work with the Fusion Middleware product. The Fusion Applications will be sitting on top of this middleware product, so you will have a skill set that can be directly applied to Fusion Applications when you are finally ready to move to them. To do this you should be on a current release. As of 8.12 with foundation code 8.97, there is a lot of functionality coupled with the EnterpriseOne software. Some of this is business services, which are the way that EnterpriseOne publishes web services. These also are hooked directly into the Object Management Workbench, so that makes for easy promotion, deployment, and monitoring of the code line.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0 and Tools 8.98 Interview

SOA Done Right Is Alive and Kicking

When an analyst at the Burton Group titled her blog post "SOA Is Dead; Long Live Services," it touched a nerve in the industry. Some agreed that the acronym SOA (for service-oriented architecture) had come to mean too many things to too many people and was no longer useful.
Oracle's own Dave Chappell had some fun with the controversy and then provided a thoughtful summary. His experience leads him to doubt the original post's negative outlook:
"... based on my travel schedule over the past several months, which has been about 90% of my time going to meet with customers who are actively engaged in funded SOA projects, I would say the architecture-until-recently-known as SOA is still-alive-and-well."
But the fact remains that implementing a SOA solution isn't easy. It requires architects and developers to think in new ways, and to find the right tools and governance solutions to succeed.

Thousands of Customers, Spectacular Results
Maneesh Joshi, senior manager for SOA marketing, offers another Oracle perspective. "Many in the industry seem to have lost sight of the core value proposition of SOA," says Joshi. "SOA is not a single technology or product offering; it is a recent paradigm for building business applications. SOA is an architectural approach that yields tremendous benefits when it's done right. We have thousands of customers running Oracle SOA-based applications, and they have seen spectacular results (video)."

According to Joshi, several key factors have led to Oracle's success when others have failed. "Our track record has much to do with Oracle's preintegrated and comprehensive offering, our commitment to industry standards, and our expertise with SOA governance," says Joshi. "But most important is our attitude toward each customer: Oracle understands that each customer's business problem is unique, requiring a unique solution made possible only by Oracle's flexible SOA platform. Oracle does not leave it to the acronym 'SOA' to automatically solve these complex problems."

Start Off Right
Customers can start down the path towards a successful SOA initiative today by taking a free SOA online assessment. "Participants get a personalized report that tells them where they are with respect to their vision for SOA, and where they stand with respect to their peers," says Joshi. "The survey also provides them with concrete recommendations to optimize their SOA."

Oracle Open World 2008 - Utilities for Batch Processing - EnterpriseOne Tools 8.98

In my oppinion, these new tools for analysing and troubleshooting batch jobs are the most important enhancement we got, talking in day-by-day situations. For us, developers and JDE technicians, to have a tool that can provide dynamic logging or statistics in execution time on server is a big advance.

Three are the main enhancements for Batch processing as follow:

  • Audit Data - Detail how a batch job was submitted and statistics when finished
  • Dynamic Logging - Turn detailed log on/off while a batch job is processing on server
  • Introspection - Display statistics regarding the state  of a batch job while it's running

Below a sample screen shots with these features. You may click the picture to zooming in.

Here we have the "Execution Detail" row exit from Work Submitted Jobs to launch the new Audit Detail application for JDE jobs at "P", "D" or "E" status. It's real! I told "P" status!! Let's check:

Once in Execution Detail application, we can chose the following options:
  1. Introspection Data
  2. Audit Data
  3. Processing Options
  4. Data Selection
  5. Data Sequencing
  6. Report Interconnect
  7. SQL Statement
I'll describe only the options number 1 & 2. Let's start by the number 2:

Audit Data
This is the default screen when we got the Work Submitted Jobs screen, with the difference that we have the options: "Debug Logging Status" and "Introspection Status" as you can see in the picture below.  Audit data displays details about how a batch job was submitted and how it completed. Audit information is captured for all UBE's.

Introspection
This powerful tool allow us to monitor in execution time any Job to get for example the current event, current code line number, last BSFN called. This will improve the tracking for problems, we can now check in real time the execution of a job running on server. I think this breaks a big paradigm in JDE and will allow us to have a more precise diagnostics of the batch flow in case of problem.

Turn the Introspection "ON" while the UBE  is running, displays current statistics. Refresh button reload statistics and "Turn Logging On" to generate debug logs, if logging not turned on when UBE was submitted.

Let me know if you want more information about this feature!

In this weekend I'll prepare a post in how to install the OC4J web server in the JDE Demo 9.0.

Oracle Open World 2008 - JD Edwards Enterprise One Tools 8.98

From here, we'll talk more specifically about
EnterpriseOne Tools 8.98

Let's see how Oracle is improving the product to provide real business value to users of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne application releases 8.10 through 8.12.

So, what Oracle is doing to enhance EnterpriseOne?

• Empower users with better reporting tools
A new Java Database Connectivity (jdbc) driver securely opens up the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne database for streamlining of reporting and other data access needs.

Optimize the execution of batch programs
Increase visibility for administrators into currently executing batch processes and enable an
in depth batch processing analysis and profiling. We'll discuss more about this new feature in the next post.

Improve the productivity of end users
Adopts the Oracle user interface standards, better user control over the screen real estate,
improves support for screen readers, and adds recovery tools for failed transactions.

Simplified integration with portals
Support for Web Services for Remote Portals (WSRP), the industry standard technology
which simplifies how JDE EnterpriseOne content is managed within supported portals.

Expanded Platform options
More options to better leverage the latest infrastructure hardware and software, as well as
take advantage of virtualization technology

BI Publisher Enterprise Edition for Interactive Report
When to use:
  • Event Outside JDE E1 triggers the report
  • Read Only Data
  • Minimal Data Manipulation
  • Ad-hoc or On-demand
